General Jim Hackler Championship

The General Jim Hackler Championship, which has been played in Myrtle Beach at the Tournament Players Club for the past nine years. The tournament, named after the late United States Air Force General James F. Hackler, Jr., is one of the most prestigious tournaments for NCAA golf teams. Hackler supported Coastal Carolina’s golf program throughout his years. Now, yet another NCAA event is coming to the Grand Strand!

The Golfweek Collegiate Tournament will be played September 11 through the 13th at two of the most renown courses in the area: True Blue Plantation and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. Like its counterpart, the tournament will feature twelve of the highest rated collegiate golf teams: Boston College, Campbell Central Arkansas, East Carolina, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Troy, North Texas, Northern Iowa, South Florida, Texas State, and UNC-Wilmington. Sponsors and directors of the event do not believe that this event will cause any competition to the well-established Hackler Championship. In fact, area supporters see it as a great way to allow collegiate teams to further compete in the area. The tournament will feature each school’s mens and womens golf teams.

North Texas, the top men’s team in Golfweek rankings, holds a 38-3 winning record. The team is led by sophomore Carlos Ortiz, who proudly boasts a 228-13-4 record. Ortiz was also recently chosen, along with fellow teammate Rodolfo Cazaubon, to join the Mexican World Amateur Team. He also recently captured a second-straight individual title at the Lone Star Invitational. The top women’s team, East Carolina, holds a 39-15-1 record and is led by Amber Littman. Littman, who has a 282-31-6 record, is a senior. Littman was named the Conference USA Women’s Co-Golfer-of-the-Week when she finished her eighth career top-five finish.
